Teopanzolco and Lago de Tequesquitengo

Posted by Deborah

Another weekend passed by way too quickly. Saturday afternoon, Sheila and I went to Teopanzolco, some small pyramids not far from the downtown zocalo in Cuernavaca. It seemed odd to have these ruins just sitting in the middle of everything, but that’s where they were.

After that, we walked to the nearby market, where you can buy anything from grain to flowers to leather shoes. We ran across this little girl on our way there. She was having a great time playing by herself in a cardboard box next to her mother’s food cart.

Later that night, we went out to a pizza place called La Fontana and then to a tiny little bar called El Romantico on La Plazuela where we listened to two excellent musicians sing, strum and drum for a solid hour and a half.

On Sunday, Sheila and I took a trip to Lake Tequesquitengo. (Try saying that three times fast). It was supposed to be less than an hour away, but we had to take a bus to Jojutla first, and then another bus to the lake and then a taxi to a club on the water. I think there’s an easier way, but we’re still figuring out how to navigate through the bus system here.

The club had two little pools, a restaurant and docks where you could rent a boat and driver for watersports. Lucky for us, we met three very nice guys from Mexico City who invited us to go out on their boat rental. We had so much fun skiing, wakeboarding and tubing. Our new friends had some impressive wakeboarding skills. I was also impressed that I could do it at all. The last time I tried to wakeboard, I could barely get out of the water before falling over.

From left to right: Sheila, Rommel, Denef in the back on the wakeboard, Jorge, and Arturo. Erik, from the club, is driving, and I’m behind the camera. On flickr you can see more photos, including some action shots of me waterskiing.
